Brreaking News: Kansas City, Missouri Mall Shooting in Gun Free Zone

I have had it confirmed for me that the Kansas City Mall Shooting at the Ward Parkway Center that occurred yesterday was in Gun Free Zone. Security at the mall confirms that guns are banned there.

Information on the previous mall shooting in Utah, which was also a gun free zone, can be found here. At some point, the rate of these shootings in gun free zones is going to become to overwhelming for anyone to ignore.

UPDATE: Kevin Jamison writes me that he was at the mall in the last day or so and that there were no signs that he could see at the time. Possibly the security office at the mall was mistaken. I will look into this more.

You cannot overwhelm the intentionally stupid with facts. I wish it were so, but if it were we would no longer need to debate the merits of an armed society. We would have already won and an "armed society is a polite society" would be common knowledge that was unassailable.

No way! A criminal would never disobey a sign like that. There must be a mistake.[/sarcasm]

I have been in that mall several times, I never noticed that "No Beretta" gun thing in the window.

Good thing I don't carry a Beretta eh?

I haven't had a chance to get down to check it out personally but a friend of mine - and one who's a bit rabid about looking for the signs - says that the mall is not posted.

I'm betting that you're both right.

If you go into the mall and read one of their 'policy' signs I'm sure it does say that weapons are prohibited.

I'm also sure that if you look as you come in through any entrance you will not find a sign at least 11x14 inches with letters 1" high stating that concealed carry is prohibited (as required by Missouri law to be 'posted').

There are a lot of places that try to have it both ways, usually using 3 inch square transparent 'gunbuster' stickers on clear doors with bad backgrounds and then feeling that they're 'posted'.

There are threads on this in the forums at http://www.missouricarry.com

Thank you, Dr. Lott,

There also exists a "risk-free zone" ingrained in the common psyche. With a passing nod to paranoia, it is becoming evident that there exists no "safe place" in our world.

Nowhere is safe. No will save me from danger. Risks are growing with every desperate criminal, drugged-out loonie, or pathological murderer allowed to stroll through target-rich environments.

Politicians want to legislate me. The police want to "contain" me. But the only action proven to better my chances of coming home at the end of the day is a concealed firearm and the training to make it a defensive tool.

One of the most important aspects of defensive-firearm training is situational awareness. Avoiding dangerous situations is more important than marksmanship in a firefight.

And avoiding "gun-free zones" has become the most important tenet of situational awareness.

I work a few blocks from that mall and shop there often. If their policy is that guns are banned they aren't making it obvious to their customers. I specifically shop there because it's one of the few malls in my area that is not posted.

I just walked the perimeter of the mall again today and I was unable to find a single sign on any mall or shop entrance prohibiting guns.

Of course, the other side of it is that decreasing numbers and percentages of multiple victim public shootings happen in "may issue" and "no issue" states . . . simply because there are so few of them left.

Be interesting to see what of what effect on neighboring counties adjacent to Kansas and Nebraska will be of their new "shall issue" laws. If I recall correctly, your research showed a small but consistent increase in violent crime in counties in neighboring non-shall-issue states when the permits start flowing in a new shall issue state -- is there a similar effect in counties in shall issue states?

Amazing. I could say exactly the same thing, but with the opposite conclusion:

...insanity of an armed society.

...an "armed society is a polite society" would be common knowledge that was unassailable.

Unless you're an angry 14-year old kid (Ohio, today), or triggerjerky Blackwater killers (Iraq, again today), or culturally corrupt immigrants from the bloc formerly known as the USSR (Sacramento, last month).

The fact is that nations having strict gun control laws experience many thousands fewer deaths by speeding bullet than in the US.

Unbelivable how TV news channels keep talking about safety measures in public places pretending to ignore how easy it is to get a gun in this country.
