Obama sets up website specifically for African Americans to support his campaign africanamericans.barackobama.com

Would it be appropriate for a White candidate to set up a website entitled WhiteAmericans.candidatename.com? For a candidate of Asian decent to set up a website AsianAmericans.candidatename.com? For Hispanics or any other group? Probably I am being overly sensitive, but this seems at be divisive.

Groups like this aren't based upon hatred. They are formed by a minority group that is attempting to band together for a shared result.

Members of a majority don't typically need to band together. When they do it is or is seen to be based upon hatred rather than mutual support.

This is not a black/white thing but a minority/majority thing, in other words.

That said, I'm no fan of identity politics. I think these groups can do as much harm to the minority group as good, if only in perception.

Mr. Lawson. Your comment implies that if Whites, or racial majorities form groups like this, it is based upon hatred.

The underlying question here, is what would be the reaction of others, should a white candidate engage in the same act? Badly would be my guess.

We are all Americans. To define groups by their skin color, country of origin, or other method, leads to balkanization. This divisiveness is precisely what would be despots engage in, in order to further their power or political agendas.
